The rough economy is affecting almost all of us. Following are some ways to save money on the heating. These tips can help take a bit of the sting of the financial crisis for room buddies, and place things in a new light.

  1. Don’t heat where you don’t need – If you have any unused room or closets, just seal them or keep their door closed. Don’t let your warm air move out and make your heating work harder. Close the vents in the rarely used rooms. Even close your fireplace when it is not warming your home.
  2. If you are going out of the house for work or no one is at home either switch off your heating systems or turn your thermostat down to keep the coldness out of the air for when you are back. There is another great option, you can even program your heating to come back on half an hour before you are expected home, this way you can still return to a warm house. Little discipline by all those who rent a room can help save big dollars on heating bills.
  3. Turn off your heating devices at night when you are layered up in warm clothing and extra blankets in bed to make use of blankets to keep your body warm. Just turn on your electric blanket 10 to 15 minutes before bedtime, and then turn it off when you get into bed.
  4. Wrapped hot water heater and insulated water pipes can save great amount of energy: Wrapping the heater will conserve the energy and insulated water pipes will reduce the heat loss.
  5. Gas hot water tank need to be drained 3 -4 times per year. This will help in removing most of calcium sediment from your hot water tank. By doing this your gas hot water tank will be more efficient as the tank would have less sediment to heat.
  6. Turn your water heater down…If you can’t keep the hand under hot water when it is coming out of your sink, which shows it is being heated more than necessary.
  7. Ask your landlord to get the furnace inspected and tuned every one to two years by a professional. The dirt on the furnace filter will result in more energy consumption for less result.
  8. Weather stripping – Check your home for leaks around windows and doors. Even after closing the windows and doors, you might still feel a draught in your house during winter. It is going to make your heating work harder by letting your warm air out through those leaks. Therefore, start up a search for the leaks and weather strip your home. It will prevent air from leaking through gaps around doors and the moving parts of an operable window.
  9. Let the sun heat your home in the daytime. Open your curtains in every room of your house during the day to let in the sunlight.  You can even sit in a warm sunny room or position your chair in direct sunlight on a cold day and read a book or enjoy a cup of coffee with your favorite snacks or you can enjoy with your room buddies. This way sun’s warmth is supplementing your heating system and saving you money.
  10. Another great idea to save money on energy is replacing the old energy-wasting design featured windows by latest energy efficient windows having double and triple glazing to trap air. Ask your landlord to replace the old energy wasting windows.
